This book pays homage to the film of the same name made by the writer Jean Genet in 1950, the only film he directed and completed. Like his literary work, it focuses on the transgression of sexual and racial limits and on relationships of power. In her suggestive approach, Gruner makes use of two video installations to provoke reflection on these themes, appropriating from the original film several significant moments of the scene in which the two convicts attempt to engage in amorous communication through the wall dividing their cells. Un chant d’amour gathers material from the film to underline the ephemeral character of amorous passion. The perforated book also functions as an object-metaphor of the perforated wall through which the lovers communicate.
