El árbol de Yayu is a brief fable which attempts to demonstrate the absurdity of our prejudices. Whether we like it or not, in many circumstances our judgments are based on appearances and preconceived ideas and we do not even take the trouble to get to know the persons, animals, or things we believe to be different.
Illustrator Jazmín Velasco tells us the classic story of the ugly duckling, but the other way around: the transformation does not occur in Yayu but in those around him. He makes them see that the prized pedigree of racial purity is not necessarily superior and that it would be much more enriching to learn to celebrate our differences.
In this tale Yayu is the complete opposite of everything we understand by beauty, and through suggestive imagery shows us that genuine beauty is more than skin-deep.
