The painter Carlos Mérida described Germán Cueto as a unique case in modern Mexican sculpture: an artist without precedents. The multifaceted sculptor participated in the Estridentista movement that emerged out of the Mexican Revolution, but also found a place among the avant-garde movements of Europe, alongside figures such as Zadkine and Lipschitz. In this book, a wealth of color photographs of Cueto’s sculptures and paintings accompany a detailed and carefully researched essay by Serge Fachereau, along with a selection of texts about the artist, written by his contemporaries, and the sculptor’s own singular dramatic works.
