  The purpose of this book is to make known to a wider public the most important official architectural project undertaken during the six-year presidential period that ended in 2006 in Mexico. The Biblioteca Vasconcelos is significant not only for its quality as architecture and urban landscape, but also for its importance in terms of cultural policy. The book includes a historical text which describes the most important libraries that have existed in Mexico and analyzes precedents of the present project, not only as containers of books, but as cultural concepts. Through both color and black-and-white images, the reader is given a complete tour through the new library, with Alberto Kalach’s design also presented through sketches, renderings, and plans. This is the first book dedicated to the winning project of the first international competition held in Mexico since the never-finished project for the Legislative Palace in 1896.
