It is often forgotten that the Mexican Revolution was the first socialist revolution of the twentieth century. The artistic creations that emerged from this armed conflict, influenced as well by the Russian Revolution and the international struggle against fascism in the 1930s, constitute one of the most original valuable contributions of Mexico to the visual arts. This book is an exploration of the socialist aesthetic in its pictorial, sculptural, photographic, architectural, and graphic manifestations. It includes texts by Ricardo Pérez Escamilla, Carlos Monsiváis, and Rafael Barajas, el Fisgón, as well as a brief selection of poems of the period.
