Perfiles is a collection of some of the classic works of twentieth-century
Latin-American literature. The collection has two aims: to bring
back into circulation a number of important titles that have been out
of print in many Latin-American countries, and to give new prominence
to significant authors who for one reason or another are little
known among present-day readers.
The collection begins with El Llano en llamas and Pedro Páramo by
Juan Rulfo, two masterpieces of twentieth-century Latin-American literature.
The third volume of the series is Los geniecillos dominicales
by the Peruvian writer Julio Ramón Ribeyro: one of the first “urban
novels” published in Latin America. The ten marvelous short stories
that make up the collection Nadie encendía las lámparas, by Felisberto
Hernández, constitute the fourth volume in the series. For the first
time in a Spanish-language edition, this volume includes the foreword
Italo Calvino wrote for the Italian translation of the collection. The fifth
volume, entitled La escritura obsesiva, is an anthology of texts by the
Mexican writer Salvador Elizondo, with a foreword by Daniel Sada.
